Bethlehem, Palestine

Dear Graduates and Friends of Bethlehem University,

Greetings from Bethlehem!

During this holy season of Lent, I pray that this is a time for each of us to grow in our awareness of the great love that God has for each of us and for one another -- a love that is pure, freely given, all-embracing, and beyond our expectations! We at Bethlehem University truly feel this holy presence, particularly during this time in this Holy Land.

One example of God's goodness and love came to us recently through Father Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Custos, and Father Ibrahim Faltas, General Administrator of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land. On 31 January 2013 Brother Peter Bray signed an MOU creating a fraternal partnership with the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, bringing us closer to the purchase of the Mount David property in Bethlehem. Yes, with the cooperation of the Latin Patriarchate and the generous support of the Custody and other donors, we have raised $8.3 million of the $13.8 million we need to complete the purchase of the Mount David property - and to expand the University campus by one-third its current size! Read more about this historic move by clicking

What are you doing this summer? During July and August, you can come to Bethlehem University to study Arabic at our Brother Vincent Malham Center that is only 100 meters from the Church of the Nativity! Already, international university students and also "older adults" are registering for one or both of the summer sessions. Come and join us. You can read more about the details here.

Mrs. Vera Baboun,
Mayor of Bethlehem

Often we talk about Bethlehem University and its role in preparing leaders for Palestine. One wonderful example of this comes to us through the life of Mrs. Vera Baboun, graduate from the class of 1985, and former faculty member in the English Department. Bethlehem University congratulates Her Honor Mrs. Vera Baboun, the first female Mayor of Bethlehem, and looks forward to supporting her as she leads us forward to a better future. You can read more about Vera and her children, some of whom are also graduates of Bethlehem University.

I thank you for your continued support, and I wish you a blessed Lenten season.
